Located at the southern foot of the Serra d’Ossa, this place is special—you can really feel it! Two streams carry rainwater from the mountains, keeping the ground cool in the scorching Alentejo heat, and ensuring the water table never drops below 5 meters. It was here that vineyards were once planted; the place was known as Chão dos Eremitas—“Chão” being an old term for a flat area, and “Eremitas” referring to the hermit monks of the Order of St. Paul.

There is evidence here of uninterrupted wine production dating back to the 14th century; the vineyard was so important that a Papal Bull issued in 1397 exempted the “Pauperes Eremitas” from paying taxes on their vineyards. But archaeology goes even further back: the discovery of the only Phoenician wine amphora found in the country’s interior, dating to the 8th century 8th century B.C., links this site to wine some 900 years before the arrival of the Romans—amounting to 3,000 years of history tied to wine.

The grapes, grown on granitic soils and cultivated under a certified integrated pest management system, are sorted on a sorting table: 30% whole bunches and 70% destemmed grapes are allowed to fall by gravity into the vat. Spontaneous fermentation and 40 days of maceration on the skins, followed by 12 months of aging in stainless steel tanks.

Very bright ruby color; intense, fresh nose with notes of tart red fruit, pomegranate, and graphite. A very refined, taut attack—elegant, with great depth and tension. A red wine that shows the Alentejo can be something else entirely.
